Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery
Sustainable Strategies for a Place of Reverence
The Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery, located on I-37 just northwest of downtown Corpus Christi, is well situated to serve the estimated 50,000 veterans in this 15-county region. The master plan provides for 31,500 gravesites over a 40-year period.
Phase One includes an administration and maintenance complex, public restrooms, a gravesite locator, an assembly area, a committal shelter, and a columbarium. Working with PBS&J, Komatsu Architecture, and The LA Group, RVi developed a landscape design that will create a appropriately dignified setting while addressing the region’s subtropical climate and assuring long-term sustainability. The cemetery’s architectural design incorporates the stucco and red tile vernacular of coastal South Texas and the plant materials palette is entirely native and xeriscapic. The water supply, Type II effluent, required special provisions for irrigation design, storage, filtration, and scheduling.
