This month we sat down with Ted Nelson, president of Newland Communities' Central Region. Ted leads teams in Texas and the Midwest to create award-winning residential communities that are well-known for their quality, affordability and amenities. RVi’s 10-year client relationship with Newland includes planning and landscape architecture in the Austin, Houston and the Dallas-Fort Worth areas on such communities as Falcon Pointe, Teravista and Cinco Ranch Southwest. A self-described news junkie and University of Texas at Austin graduate, Nelson follows at least six newspapers a day and keeps his finger on the pulse of the economy and the country. That insight and his one-word approach to doing business in 2010 may be the keys to his long, successful career. Read more
Next month construction starts on the renovation of Brazos Park East in Waco, Texas, designed by RVi and the Wallace Group. Located next to Waco’s crown jewel, Cameron Park, and formerly called Cameron Park East, the renovation will help give the park its own identity and make it stand out in Waco’s park system. Highlights of the park will include a covered stage to allow the city to play host to concerts and shows with grass seating under spreading shade trees. A river overlook will provide romance and photographic vistas of the Brazos River. Additionally a much improved circulation system and parking options will help traffic flow and a new boat ramp will be constructed with aid from a Texas Parks and Wildlife grant. The park already plays host to the Southern Drag Boat Association races twice a year and the addition of a canoe ramp will make it a destination spot on the Brazos River paddling trail. The park also welcomes a wide variety of other guests with horseshoe competitions, a disc golf course and great fishing opportunities.
Three RVi'ers hit the classroom this month to talk to up-and-coming landscape architects about RVi and the art of listening to the land. Principal Paul Smith and Designer Paul Cozzolino headed to Texas A&M for Aggie Workshop at the beginning of the month. Together with long-time RVi client Whit Hanks, they presented on the owner/designer relationship and how teamwork influences the outcome of every project. Principal Mark Smith visited Louisiana State University to talk about the role of the Project Manager. Mark is in year six of leading a Pro Practice Toolbox discussion at LSU. |
