Central Park Playground – Denver

RVi team members provided landscape architecture and public outreach services for the Central Park Playground renovation in Denver, Colorado. Through innovative community engagement methods, the team developed conceptual designs, refined schematics, and delivered construction documents for this highly valued neighborhood amenity.

GOALS

We wanted to create an inclusive, engaging playground that honored the site’s existing purple mountain and stream theme while significantly expanding play opportunities. The team sought to incorporate diverse play elements that serve all ages and abilities while also striving to integrate interactive water features and dynamic play equipment.
A key step in the process was utilizing meaningful public feedback to shape design decisions and ensure community needs were reflected and addressed within the final design.

OUTCOMES

The renovated Stapleton Central Playground delivers a comprehensive play environment that responds directly t.1community input. The centerpiece is a dramatic central tower seamlessly integrated with the existing boulder climbing rock and wall, creating a multi-level adventure zone that builds upon existing site features.

A new water play system introduces interactive engagement through two hand-operated pumps feeding a sand play area, initiating a winding water channel that moves through artificial turf mountains. This design thoughtfully references and elevates the playground’s signature purple mountain and stream theme, creating visual continuity while adding exciting new features for kids in the community.

Accessibility and inclusion are central to this design. An expanded swing area features five distinct swing types, dramatically improving options for users of all ages and abilities while directly addressing a significant gap in the existing playground. The addition of trampolines and an accessible wheelchair merry-go-round complement the relocated supernova spinner, creating a dedicated zone for spinning and bouncing activities that appeal to a wide range of play preferences and physical abilities.

The project demonstrates how thoughtful community engagement and landscape architecture can transform existing recreational spaces into fun, inclusive destinations. By maintaining positive elements of the park, while introducing innovative play elements, the design creates layers of fun that will serve the Stapleton community for years to come and ensures every child and family finds engaging, appropriate play opportunities.
