Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) Water School

RVi designed a landscape as forward-thinking as the University it serves to improve campus experience and blend with the local ecology. In partnership with RG and Hunton Brady Architects, we integrated function with modern aesthetics from planning through design and construction at Florida Gulf Coast University’s (FGCU) Water School.

GOALS

For its flagship education and research building, known as the “Water School,” FGCU sought sustainable landscaping and hardscape solutions to mesh with the building’s modern aesthetics. As a focal point of campus activity, the vision was to create an environment where low-maintenance spaces offered shade, gathering, and improved circulation to enhance student and faculty life at every turn.

OUTCOMES

Merging new with old, in both aesthetics and connectivity, RVi’s landscape and hardscape solutions created a modern, outdoor environment blending seamlessly within the FGCU campus and extending the campus academic spine. Outside the Water School, open pathways capture the University’s architectural character while introducing clean, modern concrete and multi-colored brick elements shared with the new building.

Functional shade through carefully crafted landscaping enhances comfort along walkways and in gathering spaces throughout the sprawling lawn, inviting students to congregate outside and enjoy the campus experience together. Strategic circulation improvements made for smooth transitions to and from other campus structures, with drainage layouts incorporated thoughtfully throughout the hardscaping.

All across the 7.94-acre site, RVi designed the landscape as an extension of the ecosystem, using 100% native, locally sourced plantings that blend naturally with the surrounding vegetation. Guided by Best Management Practices, irrigation was tied into the University’s existing system. The lively greenspace, however, requires minimal maintenance and watering, supporting the University’s sustainability mindset and practical needs.

Together, these elements form a unified campus anchor that feels both fresh and familiar. The Water School landscape now stands as a living extension of FGCU’s campus vision, encouraging shared academic experiences while blending nature with forward-thinking function.
