Fort Collins Alleyways

As part of the Fort Collins Downtown Strategic Plan, the City identified an opportunity to transform the alleyways into exciting, pedestrian connections that bring together areas spanning from Colorado State University through the River District.

GOALS

Through a series of alleyway projects, the Downtown Development Authority hoped to create a more attractive and more walkable urban experience for residents. With design support from RVi team members, a plan was developed that would create a catalyst for redevelopment and provide enjoyable spaces to see in the region. The high-traffic locations selected include historic buildings such as the Old Firehouse building of Fort Collins and key connections allowing for easy access to destination commercial areas featuring local shops, restaurants, and hotels.

OUTCOMES

RVi’s work integrated input from a variety of sources, including one-on-one property owner meetings, stakeholder meetings, City staff, and various boards and commissions. Our team served as the lead for the design efforts in the creation of a master plan for all the alleys, and featured a design team that included civil, electrical, and structural engineers.

The award-winning, revitalized alleys blend together public and private spaces, with thoughtfully designed gateway features drawing visitors from surrounding streets. A dynamic cable art element provides a central draw into the space and animates the area at night.

The alleyways offer residents beautiful, engaging paths consisting of reimagined, vibrant landscaping and lighting to deliver a more enjoyable experience while enhancing pedestrian safety. Feature elements and attractions within the alleyways include mural installations, art structures, artful lighting, and planting that adds human scale to the spaces, with each alleyway taking on a unique personality and feel.
