Maitland Library & Quinn Strong Park
Forward-thinking design positions Maitland Library as a model for community spaces.
Located in Downtown Maitland, Florida, the new Maitland Public Library is strategically positioned within a central park and cultural campus as a new civic anchor within the community fabric.
GOALS
The library team envisioned a building and site that would better serve the community and its evolving needs. Working with the City of Maitland, the project aimed to achieve three primary objectives: create a flexible site that would accommodate the community both now and in the future, blend the library use seamlessly to the surrounding parkland, and strengthen community connectivity by leveraging the site as a key crossroad in the city.
OUTCOMES
The project successfully reenvisioned the existing Quinn Strong Park site into a welcoming, forward-thinking community center. The contemporary facility offers modern amenities that serve diverse user needs, from indoor and outdoor quiet study areas to collaborative workspaces and technology stations.
A key achievement was leveraging the site’s significant position in the community. The design team exercised context awareness to identify and elevate a forgotten greenspace into a front-facing civic anchor and social magnet. The library’s connection to Quinn Strong Park was critical in providing seamless indoor-outdoor experiences. A guiding concept was to design more than just a library within a park, blending the two together harmoniously.
The flexible design allows the library to adapt to changing community needs over time. Multipurpose spaces can be reconfigured for programming, from children’s storytimes to adult education classes and community meetings. Technology infrastructure upgrades throughout the library and site support current demands while accommodating future innovations, events, and community programming.
The project successfully balanced greenspace preservation with progress, creating an accessible facility that serves as both a modern information hub and a cherished community gathering place. Feedback from residents has been overwhelmingly positive, with visitors praising the bright, open spaces and the thoughtful integration with the surrounding parkland. The Maitland Library and Quinn Strong Park stand as a model for how cities can combine community assets to elevate not only those uses, but also the city as a whole by developing richness of place, experience, and community identity.
