Mueller Parks

From Parking Lot to Prairie

Mueller is an urban mixed-use community that has emerged as the result of the redevelopment of the abandoned Robert Mueller Municipal Airport.  RVi has played a critical role in the design of over 140 acres of parks and open space and an extensive, seven-mile hike and bike trail system at Mueller.

The 30-acre Lake Park is the central focus of the Mueller community, providing an important front door along Airport Boulevard.  The park serves as a staging point for community celebrations, outdoor performances, farmers markets, festivals, picnicking, and exercising.  The park also features a unique children’s playground adjacent to Town Center and the new Austin Children’s Museum. On the surface, the five-acre central lake presents a wonderful recreational opportunity for boating and fishing, but this amenity is also engineered to capture and filter stormwater through multiple below-ground chambers.

Around the perimeter of the community, three separate greenways offer distinctly different recreational opportunities.  The Northwest Greenway is located adjacent to Dell Children’s Medical Center and is the starting point for the trail system.  The park includes a playscape, a picnic area, and open space for passive activities.  The Southwest Greenway is the focus of an intensive environmental effort, including restoration of the site’s native Blackland Prairie habitat.  This park also features interpretive and educational opportunities, as well as many public art pieces commissioned from local artists.  The Southeast Greenway features an innovative green infrastructure solution, where the team designed a retention/detention wet pond and stormwater facility into a thriving urban wetland, now with over 200 species of native flora and fauna. It is also home to a brand-new plaza style skate park and multi-skill level pump track, the first concrete track in all of Texas!
