San Xavier Marketplace
A community-centered marketplace blending local entrepreneurship, agriculture, food systems, and cultural gathering within the Tohono O’odham Nation.
Near the historic San Xavier Mission on the Tohono O’odham Nation, tribal leaders envisioned a marketplace that could support local entrepreneurship, expand access to food- and agriculture-based economic opportunities, and serve as a gathering space where Native American history and culture intertwines with everyday life.
Goals
Our goal was to help the San Xavier District translate its vision into reality, working closely with community members and District leaders to develop a conceptual master plan as a framework for implementation. The community marketplace needed to support local Native and non-Native American businesses, while highlighting culture and history, and serving as a food hub with agricultural components.
Outcomes
The San Xavier District Marketplace fulfills multiple needs identified by Tribal leaders, community members, and stakeholders. It expands access to food, services, and locally driven commerce in a community where many everyday resources previously required travelling north to Tucson. The Marketplace also serves as a local economic engine and incubator for retail, restaurants, and entertainment within the Tohono O’odham Nation.
Surrounding the marketplace, the master plan integrates agriculture intended to strengthen local food systems and support long-term sustainability. Greenhouses for aquaponics, hydroponics, and microgreens are paired with community gardens, orchards, chef’s gardens, and a produce packaging and distribution facility designed to support both district-wide and individual agricultural initiatives. The agricultural programming also positioned the project to pursue future USDA grant funding opportunities.
Throughout the development, flexible community spaces support cultural demonstrations, farmers markets, outdoor dining, wellness activities, and gathering opportunities for District members and visitors alike. Event lawns, healing and meditation gardens, demonstration areas, and children’s play spaces were intentionally incorporated to create a destination centered around community interaction and cultural expression.
Every aspect of the conceptual master plan was developed collaboratively with tribal leaders, planning representatives, and community stakeholders to create an implementable framework capable of guiding long-term growth and phased development. Positioned adjacent to existing district farmland, the Marketplace establishes a foundation for future economic opportunity while reinforcing the San Xavier District’s agricultural heritage and community priorities.
