The Great Lawn at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU)

Inspired by surrounding wetlands and catering to specific campus needs, the Great Lawn offers a dynamic hub with an iconic sense of place at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU).

GOALS

RVi’s work on the Great Lawn began with in-depth studies and an assessment of the major east-west campus spine and periphery spaces that formed central passage and linkages to campus. The analyses revealed opportunities to improve the site grading, increase shade, and establish better-defined circulation rhythms. Through these studies and lively engagement with campus stakeholders—students, faculty, and other site users—a vision emerged for a functional, yet memorable space to invigorate campus experience.

OUTCOMES

The Great Lawn now offers dynamic, high-performance space that harkens to existing campus features and amplifies the natural wetland surroundings. Zoysia turf and elegant grading form a vibrant, dome-shaped interior lawn, surrounded by native Laurel Oak trees to establish a consistent shade canopy, granting visitors comfortable passage.

A boardwalk-style pathway features plank-style pavers in various sizes and colors to reflect the many boardwalk corridors on campus, while evoking a thematic link to the wetland fabric. Edge treatments along the preserved outer wetland systems form a natural border, giving pedestrians a passive, park-like experience on their way to classes. Outdoor classrooms on the east side of the Great Lawn provide dedicated spaces for students and faculty to enjoy the natural beauty and engage in didactic experiences.

Finally, a diverse range of contemporary garden-style seating and tables offer flexible gathering spaces. At night, elegant lighting illuminates the way to enhance safety and further promote a distinct sense of place. Whether studying, setting up a hammock, engaging in recreational activities, or simply passing through, the Great Lawn serves as a renewed cornerstone of campus life at FGCU.
